Choice Hacker Quotes

Maybe the most famous, “Your Kung Fu is No Good!” - Mitnick

One of my favorites, “I am a simple victim of a random hacker who has stolen my good name and has now soiled my good reputation” - Scott Steinmetz

And today we have, “If you’re a corporation, you can just lock everything down. We don’t have that luxury. The academic side is trying to find a line between maximum flexibility and data security. We need someone somewhere to come up with a set of best practices for schools.” The CIO of Ohio University explaining why someone, somewhere failed to protect his students records from being stolen for a year.

Yes, the world can be a mysterious and baffling place.

I assume that you are referring to the following messages:

    ftp://ftp.sdsc.edu/pub/security/sounds/tweedle-dee.au
    ftp://ftp.sdsc.edu/pub/security/sounds/tweedle-dum.au

These telephone messages were recorded the week following the attack on Shimomura’s computer. Furthermore, Shimomura during his 1/11/95 technical presentation at CMAD 3 in Sonoma Shimomura clearly stated that he thought the messages were left by whomever had rooted his machine. After Kevin’s bust and the CERT announcement, Shimomura again claimed that the taped messages were the “personal touch” of whoever had raided his machine.

Shimomura, of course, had no way of knowing who left the message. However, if he started out looking for the voice on that tape, I doubt he was looking for Mitnick, who was over 30 years old.

But don’t take my word for it, you can hear the truth for yourself by listening to the following archive:

Thanks JJ! I had totally forgotten about that. I was ops on #hack in those days and remember lots of conversations; including some suggestions about who it might have been if not Mitnick. In fact, the ip spoofing technique the attacker used had been passed around by some people on that channel about 6 months earlier; and nobody felt that Mitnick would have been doing an attack like that alone.

The Kung Fu quote was not by Mitnick.

Zeke, Merlin: I know it wasn’t Mitnick. It was a momentary mental lapse on my part; I should’ve known better.
