iPod Pirates
via Scoble, here is some discussion of Ballmer’s comments on music piracy. Clearly, the general point has nothing to do with iPod, but simply asserts that the majority of music in people’s personal collections is pirated. I think this is a safe bet.
Most people in my age brackethave huge CD collections, and have ripped these to their iPods, so likely are more than half legal. Andpeoplemy agebuy a lot through iTunes music store (I spend roughly $100/month at iTunes store, mostly on audio books; and iTunes sales numbers are public knowledge). But I also remember what it was like to be in college and high school, and I think that this demographic are much more ravenous consumers of music and much more price sensitive. I think it is very safe to say that the bulk of music out there (especially the music that gets played frequently, versus some old dusty CD that was ripped and never played) is pirated.
