MVP Panel

Currently sitting in a panel discussion of various SQL Server PMs and SQL Server MVPs. MVPs from all around the world, and all pretty experienced with SQL Server, including OLTP and BI apps. The MVPs started with a fairly unanimous set of requests for improved control over what functionality is or isn’t exposed to their users. The inclusion of CLR in the database is something that makes DBAs nervous (that’s their job, BTW; to be nervous). Most of the discussion so far is about managability and monitoring. I’m surprised that there are no major discussions about security. Lots of product feature suggestions. In general, people seem more interested in performance and managability of features they already use, or tweaks of existing features rather than new features.

Other news, Winter Corp Survey shows that SQL Server is now running some of the world’s largest databases, with one coming in greater than 5TB. The SQL Server instance, like the others, confirms that people will expand their BI business requirements to consume available resources, and the envelope should continue to expand in coming years.
